If your’e reading this, you probably already know what VPNs are, but if you don’t, i will explain. According to Wikipedia, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network.
Basically, it hides your online identity by creating a private network from a public internet connection there by giving you Privacy.
The use of VPN when browsing cannot be over emphasized as it has many benefits like being able to access content that isn’t available in your country.
It can change your location to prevent tracking from cyber-criminals and because websites you visit have access to the name of your device and your location.
As much as people sing praises about VPNs, they aren’t that safe, especially the free ones and here’s why:
Why VPNs aren’t that safe
Any free VPN tool contains malware that could be used by cyber criminals to steal users’ data, gain unauthorized access to their data or machine, or launch a cyberattack. If you think about it, why would someone create a service without monetizing it.
In some cases, the creator could monetize the VPN service by including ads. This means that it is likely the provider is sharing users’ online activity with third-party services in order to attain targeted advertising, so the advertising agency can still track you online.
When using VPN services, your connection cannot be traced back to your local computer due to a change of IP address, but you need to know that your online activity can still be followed, or traced.
VPNs can be hacked if not properly secured so you need to use a secure VPN service in order for your security to not be compromised. For example, NordVPN service was hacked in 2018, though rated among the best VPNs to use. thankfully no one was affected.
Should you use a VPN
Yeah, sure you can. Virtual Private Networks are becoming increasingly popular and are good tools for online privacy, but it doesn’t guarantee your complete safety. Just have it in mind that they have limits and do not use it for something fraudulent or dangerous.
